i went to chicago last week for a few days for the n-ten conference. while in town, katy and i got to meet up with some of the amazing filmmakers of kartemquin, the folks behind "hoop dreams" and "stevie." gordon quinn, told us some great stories about his work in documentary, but he also imparted some great life lessons. we were talking about the issue of dishes (because in both of our offices there is a kitchen where dish accumulation is sometimes problematic). he explained that he and his ex-girlfriend had come up with a brilliant solution to the problem of one person doing all the dishes while the other does none. you come to an agreement in which you take turns. person A does everything that’s in the sink, dishes accumulate, then person B does everything in the sink, dishes accumulate, then back to person A. the beauty to this system is that the longer one waits to do his/her stack, the more dishes accumulate and the more he/she has to do. so he/she feels compelled to wash them really quickly to get out of doing too many. and then, amazingly, all the dishes are being done in a timely fashion by both parties. when i got back to new york, i decided to share this idea with ari because she has a tendency to do many many many more dished than i do. i am a bad person, but not so bad as not to feel guilty. gordon’s idea could mean ari’s relief and my salvation. we have been implementing it now for about a week to ari’s delight. tonight i suffered my first consequence of inaction.
